You’re the driving force that gets energy, data and mobility flowing. As a lineworker, you ensure a reliable supply of electricity, internet and public transport – a key role for Switzerland.
As a lineworker, you become the lifeline of modern society. Be it energy supply, telecommunications or public transport – your work keeps everything running smoothly. You install and maintain high-voltage cables, fibre-optic cables and catenary line systems, ensure the use of environmentally friendly technology, and fix faults before they become a problem. You work in many different places. Sometimes you’ll be hovering at lofty heights, sometimes working on technical solutions directly on site.
The apprenticeship lasts three years and offers you an ideal environment in which to develop your talents thanks to hands-on assignments, vocational college days and external courses. A head for heights, an interest in technology and team spirit are your tickets to a career with great prospects.
Your activities
As a lineworker with Federal VET Diploma, you get Switzerland up and running. You build and maintain systems that guarantee energy, data and mobility. Your activities are varied, ranging from routing fibre-optic cables to repairing catenary lines.

Whether you’re installing power lines, splicing fibre-optic cables or repairing catenary lines – you help keep everything running smoothly. You pay attention to safety standards, environmental protection and the technical quality of your work.
Routing high- and low-voltage cables
You install cables that supply households, businesses and cities with electricity and then maintain them regularly.
Splicing fibre-optic and copper cables
You connect data lines precisely and check their quality – to ensure that the internet works reliably everywhere.
Installing catenary line systems
Be it for trains, trams or buses – you install and maintain the power supply for public transport.
Installing and maintaining street lighting
You ensure that roads and paths are safe and well lit – be it for new builds or modernisations.
Troubleshooting
Whether it’s a short circuit or a cable break – you pinpoint the fault and get the system back up and running quickly.
Implementing safety measures
Your work ensures that all facilities comply with the latest safety and environmental standards.
